Nourished Communities team up with under threat Spitalfields City Farm to sell their produce

Nourished Communities, the London based community food hub and online market stall set up to help farmers and local producers during Covid has teamed up with Spitalfields City Farm, a gem found right in the heart of Brick Lane – the nearest city farm to the square mile to sell their fresh produce.

Spitalfields City Farm is run by three growers whose energy and excitement for nature is infectious. The farm was started in 1978 in response to locals’ wishes to turn wasteland into allotments, having lost theirs to developers.

The farm has also been under regular threat from developers. Bids to various charitable trusts, companies and public funding bodies, as well as strong local support and petitions have enabled the farm to continue and grow and Nourished Communities is proud to be part of this support.

Rollo Millership, Founder of Nourished Communities commented:

“Spitalfields City Farm is run by three growers whose energy and excitement for nature is infectious – their organ leaves are rather spectacular too. If you haven’t been we’d thoroughly recommend a trip to see their animals and crops and it’s free (any donations welcome). They do some amazing things and we are lucky to work with them. Lettuce know what you think!”

Examples of leaves grown on the farm that are now available from Nourished Communities store located in Islington on Canonbury Lane, offering produce to local residents and shoppers who place orders for pick-up online include:

  • Rainbow Chard
  • Salt Leaf
  • Mixed Salad
  • White mustard
  • Mint
  • Mooli (daikon, White Radish)
  • African Kale
  • Russian Fizz Kale
  • Calendula
  • Nettles (Gypsy Spinach)
  • Lemon Balm

Since launching, Nourished Communities has tripled in size and delivers nationwide, whilst ensuring they maintain community & localness with the producers they stock. Their next with collaboration is with Yonder climbing centre where they are opening a new collection point on May 23rd 2021.

With the closure of Farmers’ Markets, Rollo Millership, who has worked on fruit and vegetable stalls since a teenager, started Nourished Communities at the onset of the coronavirus crisis (March 2020) to support local businesses, producers and farmers whose livelihoods have been affected by the lockdown and also those who didn’t want to miss out on fresh, seasonal produce from farmers’ markets.
