Met Police officer stabbed detaining robbery suspect

Detectives are investigating after a police officer was stabbed whilst attempting to arrest a suspect following a robbery in Sutton.

Police were called shortly before 19:00hrs on Tuesday, 2 January to reports of a knife-point robbery close to St James Road.

Officers attended and spoke with the male victim before commencing a search of the local area.
Officers identified the suspect who ran from police. Following a short foot chase, the man was detained outside a pub on the High Street.

During the arrest, a police constable sustained a stab wound to his leg. He was taken by the London Ambulance Service to a south London hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and robbery. He has been taken to a south-west London police station where he remains in custody.

The victim of the robbery was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was not stabbed.
