Leyland SDM helps build Ancient Greek wonderland

Award-winning theatre company Punchdrunk called on the expertise of Leyland SDM to help create a 100,000sq ft Ancient Greek immersive experience in South London.

Punchdrunk needed to turn two huge former military arsenal buildings into a mythical setting for its latest production, The Burnt City, which tells the story of the fall of Troy transposed to a future parallel world.

The company required a specialist to match the size of the project so turned to Leyland SDM, with its extensive range of DIY and decorating products and 32 stores across the capital, for most of the materials required to build the set and staging.

Punchdrunk said: “Leyland SDM were instrumental in making the show happen, from setting up an on-site shop to being at the end of the phone, they were there even when most shops were struggling with supply chain issues. They really went above and beyond.”

In The Burnt City, audiences wear masks and are free to roam two worlds while the Punchdrunk cast tells the mythical story.

Roberto Agnese, Business Development Manager at Leyland SDM, said: “This was a really exciting project for us to be involved in.

“We have been involved with supplying materials for theatre sets in the past so Punchdrunk knew we had the range, quality and reliability to deliver their project.

“Punchdrunk approached us as one of the leading DIY and decorating specialists in London. Largely using our Chelsea store, we were able to provide many of the materials they required, including timber, plasterboard, paint and fixings.

“We even worked with the team to set up a mini Leyland SDM store on their premises so they could take what they needed, when they needed, and pay later.”

The acclaimed show is set to wow and intrigue in equal measure until December 4 at 1 Cartridge Place, Woolwich.

Punchdrunk has been hailed “the greatest immersive theatre company of all time” with previous hits over of 20 years including Sleep No More and The Drowned Man.
