Euro 2020: Supercomputer predicts the outcome of Portugal vs Germany

The group stages of Euro 2020 are filled with some exciting encounters, none more so than those in Group F, where world champions France, defending European champions Portugal, Germany and Hungary will square off for a place in the knockout stages.

Matchday two’s clash between Portugal and Germany promises to be a key fixture for both sides if they want to progress from ‘the Group of Death’. However, there is little to separate the sides in the Euro 2020 odds.

So, to find out how the game will pan out, bookmaker Paddy Power have commissioned a supercomputer simulation of the match. But who will come out on top and who will be left licking their wounds? Let’s find out!

Fernandes gives Portugal the lead

After another solid season with Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes looks to be in fine form heading into the Euros and he’s tipped to open the scoring against the Germans at the Allianz Arena, Munich — firing Portugal into the lead on 32minutes.

Pepe sent for an early shower

With Portugal holding onto their 1-0 lead, Germany will be gifted a way back into the game as hot-headed defender Pepe is predicted to be shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders by the referee in the 58th minute.

Two goals in quick succession give Germany the lead

Not even 10 minutes after Pepe’s dismissal, Germany are expected to find a way back into the game through a strike from Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz. The veteran Porto defender’s red card will prove even more costly as İlkay Gündoğan is then predicted to give Joachim Löw’s side the lead in Munich.

Werner rubs salt in the wounds

To make matters worse for Portugal, Timo Werner is set to come off the bench and extend Germany’s lead to three goals to one — ending any hopes of the defending champions salvaging anything from the game late on.
