Angie Best slams David Beckham over World Cup ‘greed’

MODEL Angie Best has slammed David Beckham for taking money from the regime of Qatar, accusing him of greed for promoting the controversial World Cup tournament.

Asked if he was guilty of double standards over his reported £10m deal to promote Qatar as a cultural ambassador, Ms Best said: “God, it’s time to burst the Beckham bubble for heaven’s sake.

“I don’t think he’s got two pennies worth of brains in his head to know what he’s doing anyway. I don’t think he sees further than the end of his nose.

“And yes, of course, he’s doing it for money. His son has just married one of the wealthiest heiresses in America, so Beckham has now got to somehow catch up.”

Ms Best was speaking during a panel discussion on GB News during which she also went on to accuse Beckham of greed over the deal with the country which has been accused of rampant human rights abuses.

She said: “So he’s going to be spending that ten million in a few weeks. It’s all about greed.

“The fact that Qatar gets a free pass on this just shows that it’s all about greed and money. And that takes the beauty of the game away.

“It’s disgusting.”

In response GB News’ Presenter Mark Dolan commented: “Well, let me let me jump in and defend David and say that he’ll argue he’s there to represent football, which of course, he has done with distinction for Manchester United and England on many occasions.

“Plus, of course the guy has done a colossal amount for charity, so I guess there’s two sides to every coin…”

Beckham has previously been urged to speak out about the “deeply concerning” human rights situation in the country by Amnesty International after signing a

a lucrative deal to be a 2022 Qatar World Cup ambassador.

Human rights issues in the host country have been under scrutiny since Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010.

“Qatar’s human rights record is troubling, from the country’s longstanding mistreatment of migrant workers, to its curbs on free speech and the criminalisation of same-sex relations,” Amnesty’s Sacha Deshmukh said last year.

“It’s not surprising that David Beckham wants to be involved in such a major football event, but we would urge him to learn about the deeply concerning human rights situation in Qatar and be prepared to speak out about it,” he added.

Qatar has brought in migrant workers to help build the infrastructure for the winter World Cup.

Amnesty claims that “thousands” of migrant deaths have not been properly investigated.
